Barbers
Barbering covers everything from a fifteen-minute clipper cut to an hour of scissor work on grown-out hair. The two are different trades, and shops tend to be genuinely good at one or the other.
- If you want a fade, look for a shop that does them constantly — precision comes from volume.
- If your hair is longer than a few inches, look for scissor work and longer appointment times. A 20-minute slot is not enough.
Men's haircuts
Men's cutting is done by barbers and by hair salons, and the right choice depends less on the sign above the door than on what you are asking for.
- Name the result, not the service. "Low taper with length on top" gets you a better cut than "short back and sides".
- Bring a photo. It removes most of the guesswork about how short "short" is.
Hair salons
Most salons will cut and colour anyone's hair. The differences that matter are which hair types they see most, how long they allow per appointment, and whether they will tell you honestly when what you want is not achievable in one sitting.
- Look at what the salon is actually known for. A colour-led salon and a cutting-led salon are different businesses.
- For a big change, look for somewhere that offers a consultation before the appointment rather than at the start of it.
Curly hair salons
Curly hair behaves differently wet and dry, which is why most curl specialists cut it dry, curl by curl. Going to someone who cuts curls occasionally is the most common reason people end up with a shape they did not ask for.
- Dry cutting. If they wet-cut and blow-dry straight, they are cutting a shape you will never wear.
- Ask which curl patterns they work with most. Loose waves and tight coils need different hands.
Highlights & balayage
Foils, babylights and balayage are different techniques for different results, and the maintenance they need varies enormously. Deciding how often you are willing to sit in a chair is as important as choosing the shade.
- Balayage grows out softly and can be left for three to four months. Foils give more lift but show regrowth sooner.
- Ask to see work on hair that started the same colour as yours, not just the finished blondes.
Colour correction
Correction is the most technical work a colourist does: removing banding, evening out box dye, or undoing a colour that went wrong. It is priced by the hour because no two heads are the same.
- A consultation before the appointment is non-negotiable. Anyone quoting a fixed price sight-unseen is guessing.
- Ask for a realistic plan. Serious corrections often need two or three sessions.
Blow-dry & event styling
Styling for an event is a different job from a regular blow-dry, and the difference is whether it still looks good six hours later.
- For events, book a stylist who does them regularly — hold is a skill.
- Long or thick hair usually attracts a surcharge and a longer slot.
